Ray (2004)

Last weekend I watched the special edition DVD of Ray. The music is excellent. Jamie Foxx does a fabulous job of becoming Ray Charles. I think he deserves an Oscar for his performance.

Who knew that Foxx was an accomplished pianist? Director Taylor Hackford was pleasantly surprised when he learned that Foxx would be able to play the piano for his film. More information like this is availabe on the special features DVD and worth watching.

There is a sadness to the story of Ray Charles that comes across in the film. I think you get a reall sense of this in the scenes that flashback to his childhood. Overall, the film is a great tribute to a musical genius. Turn up the volume and prepare to be impressed.

Did you watch the “extended” version? What a piece of crap. Not the scenes themselves, but the way they took you out of the film through some sort of crude “branching”. They even left in one scene that had multiple takes and you could hear the director saying “cut”! Talk about taking you out of the narrative. Since this was a two-disc release, why couldn’t they put the theatrical release on one and the extended on the other? Probably just rushing to get it out before the Oscars. Look for another “special edition” in a few months, after it wins its Oscars.

I started watching the extended version but after the first flashback/extended scene I thought the disc was screwing up. I started the movie over and watched the theatrical version. Sounds like I made the right choice.

No doubt the studios will see an opportunity to re-release Ray in an “Awards Edition” 3 disc set or something ridiculous.
