I need to get a life

Designing websites, email newsletters and CD-ROMs has become as routine as eating, breathing and sleeping. Two projects go out the door, another two come in and they always need to be done ASAP. “How soon can you show us something?” is usually how my meetings end these days.

Just when I think I’m getting ahead, the scope creep in one project starts to increase (along with my billable time). I’ve become a master juggler when it comes to managing multiple projects because I can’t say no.

I never want to say no to a client. You never know when a dry spell is going to hit and you have bills to pay. This hasn’t happened for a couple of years but it’s always in the back of my mind.

I should probably hire someone but that presents a whole other set of challenges that I’m not ready to face. I don’t think I’m a control freak. I just find it easier to do everything myself. Denial? I don’t know what you’re talking about.

I need to get a life and get out of this office. I need to watch more movies, play more hockey, spend more time with the family, take some pictures, visit a gym and get some sleep. I need help.

Only 4 CD-ROMS, 1 PowerPoint presentation, 1 email newsletter, and 3 websites to go.

At least it’s raining outside.

Awww, honey.
I wish you had more time for sleep, hockey, movies….family.
We miss you.
(Hey, I’m reviewing movies and you’re writing personal stuff? Did the earth’s rotation shift?)

In the time it took you to write this, you could have knocked off a couple more CD’s. Get back to work.

Work schmerk. If you aren’t out there taking some photos you will not be recharging your creative batteries and your design work will suffer. A glass of wine will also help. Take some pictures, try the sharpening techniques I posted on my blog, have a glass of Pinot Noir or Meritage, then tell me you don’t feel a heck of a lot more creative and productive. I defy you. Double dog dare.

I’m not sure if snapping some photos while inebriated is going to pay any bills.

Man, Paul, you’re a slave driver. You need to get a digital camera and a bottle of wine and head down to the beach. Are you from Ontario? Easterners are way too high-strung. Jay, that’s one more reason to come to Vancouver.

ok, we’ll compromise. Jay - you go take pictures, then drink. Paul will shell out and pay the bills. And I will continue to issue my usual sagacious logorrhea. Lissa can make a documentary of the whole thing and WE ALL WIN.

Paul lives down the street and is the furthest thing from a high-strung slave driver. I say this because he is an accountant.

I do like the idea of Paul going to work and paying my bills while I wander around the city taking pictures and drinking Brouilly. However, knowing Paul he’d find some rational explanation why that wouldn’t be in his best interest. Sheesh!

Hey, my buddy Neil might be able to help you out on a freelance basis. He’s a work-alone kind of guy, too. His blog is at www.beatnikpad.com. Not sure if he needs work right now, but I should probably introduce you guys anyway.
