The Sopranos and House
I recently watched the season premiere of The Sopranos in HD and all I can say is “wow!”
It’s been a long wait for season 6 and the first episode was worth the wait. The writing and the acting on this show is so finely tuned now that each episode is like watching a four star movie. And to think I resisted watching for the first four seasons. What was I thinking?
The HBO microsite for the The Sopranos has a great feature called Sopranos Maps. It uses Google Maps to show you key locations from Season 5. Each location has a video clip and episode synopsis. Brilliant!
Another show that I can’t get enough of these days is House on Fox. This is another show I resisted and had no interest in whatsoever. A friend of mine in Vancouver forced me to watch an episode and now I’m hooked. I downloaded the first 10 episodes of Season 2 (via BitTorents) and can’t get enough of this show.
The writing is clever and quite funny. Hugh Laurie is perfect in the role of Dr. Gregory House. The special effects are pretty amazing in some episodes. Should I continue or are you going to tune on March 28 for the next episode?

Pat and I were also turned onto House by a friend. However, after eating up six or seven episodes in a row, I’m bored of it. How many times can they tell the story of a patient with seven different illnesses overlapping, and mimicking another illness that he doesn’t actually have?

I’ve seen about seven episodes now as well. At times it is predictable—someone starts coughing at the beginning of the show and you think they’re going to be the patient when somebody in the background drops to the floor instead.
The did this with the last episode where Howard Hessman was the guest star. Not a very good episode. However, the episode before that where the female super model actually turned out to be a guy was brilliant and very funny. The best episode I’ve seen.
I’m not tired of the show yet and I hope the novelty doesn’t wear off or I might have to go back to reading books and going to the gym!

House and The Sopranos are good, but the real television gold is to be found in Battlestar Galatica. It is by far the best show on tv right now. It is an intense survival drama that happens to take place in outer space. There are dozens of brilliant characters and the overall story arch is intense. Now, you may be thinking star trek, stargate, original BSG. Forget those, the only other scifi hourlong that even comes close to BSG quality is firefly. Even then, BSG is a hundred times the show firefly was.

A few people have mentioned BSG to me but I can’t get Dirk Benedict and that stupid robot that always used to say “beady beady beady…”
Okay, I’ll have to give BSG a chance and check it out. The books and the gym can wait.

New BSG is as far as you can get from old BSG. No cheese in sight. The show is dark and serious (as any show about the tattered remnants of the human race being hunted by genocidal robots should be).
You’ll have to do BSG right. That means starting with the mini series, then season 1 and then season 2. The story line is one long progression, if you jump in anywhere but at the start you’ll be asking a lot of questions. Besides, the earliest episodes, with the 33 minute clock (you’ll see), are intense.

Once I finish designing the Trind website, I’ll sit in the basement for a few days and start with BSG (season 1), followed by House (season 1).
