Taking a break
I’m heading for the shores of Lake Huron and taking a break for a few days. Stay tuned.

Grandmother completes college course in record time
What’s the big deal you ask? This grandmother happens to be my aunt Cynthia and she’s 72 years old! Apparently this story was picked up by CNN earlier in the week.
Full story and photo here.

Unnessary Censorship
The editing in Jimmy Kimmel’s Unnessary Censorship is brilliantly funny!

Safari Tidy plugin
This is for the web developer geeks out there. The Safari Tidy plugin is an (X)HTML validation tool for Apple’s Safari.
I prefer using Safari over Firefox for everyday web browsing but rely on Firefox for developing and testing websites — Firefox has the best most development plugins. Now I can use Safari to check client websites for errors and code validation when I make changes to them.

FinalGear.com
Last week I mentioned the television show Top Gear on BBC Two. Unfortunately I don’t have a PVR and I don’t live in the UK. Fortunately I do have a couple of DSL modems and a complete listing of Top Gear torrent files over at FinalGear.com.
FinalGear.com is a Top Gear fan site that you’ll want to bookmark if you like the show. I’ve watched all of season 8 so far and part of season 7. Seasons 3-8 are available online. Long live BitTorent — the poor man’s global PVR.

Evel Knievel Commercials
If you were a kid growing up in the 70s then maybe you had a Batman or Spiderman action figure. I had both but it was the Evel Knievel action figure that seemed magical.
Evel Knievel was a real person, a daredevil, a hero — I didn’t know he broke people’s arms with baseball bats when he got mad. I was just a kid.
Check out these Evel Knievel TV commercials on YouTube:
I had both of these toys and remember watching these commercials. If you’re still feeling nostalgic, you can pick up an Evel Knievel Stunt Set from Back to Basic Toys. Tempting. Very tempting.

Easily mispronounced domain names
Grupthink is compiling a list of easily mispronounced domain names. A few companies need to fire the marketing department.
Number 1 is TherapistFinder.com or TheRapistFinder.com depending on how you look at it. Number 2 is Pen Island with the address Penisland.net. You get the idea. Funny stuff.

2006 Toronto International Film Festival
The 2006 Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 7-16 this year. 26 films have been announced so far. tiffreviews.com has a nice list of confirmed films that links to IMDB. There is also a list of unconfirmed films that might show at this year’s festival.
Copying Beethoven (2006) looks pretty interesting. Get a load of the wig on Ed Harris who plays Ludwig. Wow!
If you have any information on upcoming films then please leave a comment.

Recently screened films
I’m posting my DVD reviews under Recently screened films in the sidebar. The reviews are shorter and will allow me to keep a better record of the films I’ve watched.
The most disappointing films I’ve seen recently have to be Shopgirl and Firewall. The best films have been Match Point and Le samouraï. 16 Blocks also surprised me as a film worth renting.

Top Gear
I’ve become addicted to Top Gear on BBC Two. James told me about the show and I’ve watched the first 4 episodes of the 8th season on DivX. Brilliant! As they like to say on the show.
I’m not really into ‘car shows’ but Top Gear isn’t just any car show. The production value is incredible. They test drive a lot of high-end cars like the Ferrari F60 Enzo or Lotus Exige S. The hosts quite often slam GM for problems with the latest Cadillac or tell you how ugly they think a Porsche SUV is. You’d never see this on a North American show where automobile ads appear every commercial break.
Top Gear is also incredibly funny and the 3 hosts do some crazy things to vehicles each week — making a convertible out of a minivan and taking it through a car wash.
Each episode also features a celebrity driver like chef Gordon Ramsay or actor Ewan McGregor who compete for the fastest lap times around a race track. Forget about Pimp My Ride and the other car shows out there. This is the best one on TV. Period.

Photography Contests
There are few photography contests that I’m thinking about entering. If you’re an amateur photographer then have a look at these contests and submit your work.
Nature in Focus—Environmental Photography Competition
The competition is in its 3rd year and presented by The Nature of Things with David Suzuki and the Planet in Focus International Environmental Film & Video Festival.
Photo Life magazine’s international photo contest has more than $50,000 in prizes. Categories include: the earth, the people, their lives.
Sponsored by Gentec International (Sigma, Roots). Several themes which include: seascapes, ice, traffic jams, mountain paths, and self portraits.

AppZapper
Space is getting low on my drives. The number of programs I no longer use seems to be increasing (demos, trial versions of software etc.). The solution? AppZapper.
AppZapper is great little program for OS X that will properly remove/uninstall applications and their support files. The interface is incredibly simple and easy to use.

The Cottage Life
I just got back from an extra long weekend on Lake Kashabog, northeast of Peterborough. I’m feeling relaxed, well-rested, recharged. Being cut off from satellite TV, email and blogs will do that to you.
Friends of ours are out of town and offered us their cottage for the weekend. Nice friends. They’ll be glad to know that I didn’t crash their boat and nobody drowned while they were away.
Now it is back to a mountain of email, coaching rookie ball (baseball) tonight, tomorrow night and the night after that! I also play hockey tonight at 10 PM and then again on Thursday. Why did I come back again?
