Canon Digital Rebel XTi
Last week, Canon announced the Digital Rebel XTi (400D) and the specs of this new camera are very impressive. I bought a Digital Rebel XT (350D) last year and I love it but this new offering from Canon has me depressed.
The Rebel XT is an entry level digital SLR camera. I was thinking of upgrading to a low-end professional camera — Canon EOS 30D. I’m depressed because Canon’s update to the Digital Rebel makes it better than the 30D in many ways.
Consider these new specs:
- 10.1 MP resolution (up from 8 MP in the Rebel XT and 30D)
- 2.5: rear LCD (up from 1.8“)
- 9 point autofocus (same used in the 30D)
- new vibrating sensor to reduce dust on the sensor
- improved user interface
Why would anyone bother purchasing an EOS 30D at this point? It will be at least another year before Canon updates the 30D to something worth looking at.
What I would really like to get is a Canon EOS 5D with a full-frame sensor — perfect for landscape photography. Unfortunately I don’t have an extra $3,799.00 to spend on a hobby that makes a little bit of money.

I would guess that there is more to the 30D than just a nine point focusing system and a 2.5 inch LCD. The full specs for the XTi don’t seem to be available yet, so I can’t compare point by point, but my guess is, the 30D has a stronger, better built chassis, a more robust shutter, a greater range of shutter speeds, a greater range of metering patterns available, etc. Does your XT record RAW data?

Poor photographer.
I’ve found that if you make just a bit of money taking pictures, you’d feel totally justified putting that money back into equipment.
Don’t know *where* I got that idea.

Paul, the 30D does have a better built and slightly bigger camera body but that’s where the major differences end. Take a look at the first link in my post for a good comparison.
Both cameras use the same processor and the Rebel XTi has 2 MP more resolution! On paper, the REbel XTi doesn’t make a lot of sense as entry level digital SLR in Canon’s lineup.
My XT records RAW data. I never shoot JPEG (to get maximum quality). I guess I’ll have to wait until the XTi officially comes out and is tested.

Shiz, you are so right.
If someone paid me $3,799.00 for a few of my photos (okay maybe 20 of them) then I’d run to the camera store and purchase an EOS 5D.

I know where you could have saved $4,000 recently.
